One of the first questions I get asked when a family books a session is:

"What should we wear?"

And I get it — choosing outfits for your whole crew can feel like a lot. But the good news is, it doesn’t have to be stressful. With a little guidance and a focus on comfort, colour, and cohesion, you can feel confident and look amazing in your photos (without feeling like you're wearing a costume).

Here are my go-to tips to help you style your family beautifully for your shoot — especially if you’re planning a session here in the Dandenong Ranges with me!

EARTHY COLOURS ALWAYS WIN


When in doubt, think earthy and natural. These tones photograph beautifully in my outdoor locations and help create that warm, timeless look I love.

Soft neutrals like cream, tan, rust, sage, olive, soft blues, and terracotta all blend beautifully with the natural surroundings — whether we’re shooting among tall pines, long grass or under soft golden light.

Avoid super bright or fluorescent colours — they tend to clash with nature and can distract from your lovely faces.

Avoid Logos and Branded Clothing


Clothing with logos, bold writing or cartoon characters can date your photos quickly and pull focus away from the connection between your family.

Opt for simple, textured fabrics instead — linen, knits, denim, and cotton are all great choices and add depth to your images without being loud.


Aim for Harmony, Not Matching Outfits


Gone are the days of everyone in jeans and white shirts! Instead of matching perfectly, aim to coordinate.

Pick a colour palette of 2–3 complementary tones (think soft browns, creams and olive green), and then build everyone's outfits around that. Vary the textures and patterns slightly to keep it interesting, but cohesive.

A good rule of thumb: start with your outfit first, then build the rest around it.

4. You Don’t Have to Wear a Dress


Dresses photograph beautifully, especially when they’re floaty and catch the light or breeze — but they’re not for everyone, and that’s totally okay.

If you feel more comfortable in pants, a jumpsuit, or something more structured, wear that! Confidence is key in front of the camera, and the best photos come when you feel like you.

It’s all about finding something you feel both comfortable and lovely in.
