If you’re looking for the perfect location for relaxed, nature-filled family photos in the Dandenong Ranges, you really can’t go past Woolrich Lookout in Olinda. It’s hands down my favourite spot to photograph families, and here’s why it continues to be a go-to for so many of my clients.
Why I Love Woolrich Lookout for Family Photography
As a family photographer, I’m always on the lookout for locations that offer variety, beauty, and a bit of magic — and this spot has it all. Whether you’re after something whimsical, wild, or simply relaxed and natural, Woolrich Lookout delivers in every season.
A Variety of Backdrops, All in One Spot
From towering pine trees to long grass fields and fallen logs, Woolrich offers such a mix of textures and scenery. We can capture a fairytale forest feel one minute and switch to a more open, airy setting the next — no need to drive around to multiple locations.
Beautiful Light and Big Sky Views
Late afternoon is when this location really shines. As the sun starts to dip, the sky turns soft and colourful, casting that dreamy golden light that makes every photo feel magical.
A Natural Playground for Kids
Little ones love exploring here — and that’s exactly what I want during a session. Instead of stiff poses, I encourage play, movement and connection. With so much to see and touch (and logs to climb!), it helps families relax and enjoy the moment.
Wildlife Encounters
It’s not uncommon to spot a wombat or echidna during a session, and birds often make a sweet appearance too. These little surprises make the experience extra memorable — especially for the kids!
CHANGES WITH THE SEASONS
One of the reasons I return to Woolrich Lookout again and again is how much it changes with the seasons — always offering something new, yet consistently beautiful.
Spring & Early Summer bring bursts of wildflowers that pop up in little pockets throughout the area. It’s not just a pretty backdrop — it becomes part of the story. I’ve captured so many sweet moments of little ones picking flowers for Mum, or gently running their hands through the tall blooms. There's something so pure about a child gathering a handful of wildflowers and proudly handing them over with a big grin.
Autumn brings a beautiful shift in colour as the trees take on rich, deep burgundy tones — creating that typical warm Autumn-y look.
No matter when you come, Woolrich Lookout always finds a way to surprise and delight — and that’s exactly the kind of magic I love to photograph.
